I’ll try to keep this short (although that might be difficult for me because I love this franchise so much). Raiders is probably my favorite film. It’s a damn near perfect movie.

What I really admire is how the film drops you into its universe without overexplaining anything. The history between characters is clearly there, and you can feel it in every exchange, but the audience is trusted to piece things together on their own. That restraint makes the world feel richer and more believable, while also adding a layer of mystery. None of the other Indiana Jones films quite captured that same sense of lived-in depth. It’s that classic storytelling approach of beginning in the middle, where everything feels like it was already in motion long before we arrived.

It reminds me of how George built Star Wars, a universe that feels worn, inhabited, and shaped by events we don’t fully see. The characters don’t feel newly invented for the plot, they feel like they’ve had whole lives before the opening scene.

The sequence where the FBI agents attempt to brief Indy and Marcus is a perfect example of sharp writing. What starts as a routine exposition dump flips on its head when Indy essentially takes control and lays out the situation himself. From the reveal of the Ark’s image accompanied by that unforgettable musical cue, to the chalkboard breakdown of the map room, —
to Indy lighting up at the mere mention of “Tanis” I think it’s masterful filmmaking. Every beat advances the story and character at the same time.

The sound design often steals the show for me. To me, Raiders has the best punch sounds in movie history. Every single punch sounds so impactful and has such a satisfying beefy whack to it. It’s not at all a realistic approach but for stylised, comic-punches Raiders will forever be the benchmark for me. And the whoosh and crack of the whip right before Indy turns around and we see his face for the first time in the beginning of the movie is half of what makes his introduction so powerful.

And the mirror to the chin scene always makes me laugh. I have to say I have always wondered how his scream echoes across the sea, and yet when they cut back to Marion, she’s like “What’d you say?” Marion has selective hearing when it comes to Indy yelling I guess. This film is so beautiful to look at. The performances are all fantastic. The casting, wardrobe and set designs are all top notch. The pacing is perfect. Cinematography is superb. Special effects were wonderful and managed to be that way without getting too crazy and over the top.

Something that always stuck with me but I couldn’t articulate until I was older was that he never doubts the abilities of his female companions/love interests on the basis of gender, but he also doesn’t do the “well, you want to be equal so I’m not helping” thing people sometimes do nowadays.

In the Raiders street fight, he tries to get Marion out of danger because he’s armed and she’s not. He feels responsible for dragging her into it and doesn’t want to worry about her. “I’ll hold them off” is a common trope even with pairs/groups of men. But when he finds her in Belloq’s tent, he leaves her there because she’s not a damsel in distress, and it buys him time. He trusts her not to betray him, and she says they haven’t hurt her or threatened anything severe.

I could talk about this film for ages…
